SPORTS QUOTES IV

quotations about sports

No, sports are not that important, and the sooner people realize that, the better off everyone will be. The sooner they realize going to a particular school will not make their kid turn into a pro or a Division I college athlete, the better off everyone will be.

Have you noticed that whatever sport you're trying to learn, some earnest person is always telling you to keep your knees bent?

DAVE BARRY

Sports are as necessary to divert the mind as the body.

JOHN DUNTON

Athenian Sport: Or, Two Thousand Paradoxes Merrily Argued

You could turn up your nose at the president or Coke or even God, but there were names for boys who didn't like sports. When the subject came up, I found it best to ask which team my questioner preferred. Then I'd say, "Really? Me, too!"

There are two kinds of coaches -- those who have been fired and those who will be fired.

KEN LOEFFLER

attributed, Sporting Wit: Athletic Wisecracks and Champion Comebacks

I am delighted to have you play football. I believe in rough, manly sports. But I do not believe in them if they degenerate into the sole end of any one's existence. I don't want you to sacrifice standing well in your studies to any over-athleticism; and I need not tell you that character counts for a great deal more than either intellect or body in winning success in life. Athletic proficiency is a mighty good servant, and like so many other good servants, a mighty bad master.

Sports is the only entertainment where, no matter how many times you go back, you never know the ending.

NEIL SIMON

Reader's Digest, 1992

Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting.

GEORGE ORWELL

Thus, sports are a bond of brotherhood in an elemental sense. All the brothers die. Against death, we wrestle for at least the momentary victories of brilliant form, which live in memory. Immortal deeds.

MICHAEL NOVAK

By sports like these are all their cares beguil'd,
The sports of children satisfy the child.

Sport star
If you want me I'll call
If you want me to fall
I'll fall
My dream
Let me play on your team
I'm clean
Let me tie your Nikes
Holding on for sport star
Let me wear your jersey
If you want to hurt me
Hurt me

I find it unbelievable how important sports are to our culture. We have several television stations devoted to sports 24 hours a day every single day of the year. We have professional athletes who are treated like kings, one of which has the nickname. So it is hard to argue that sports are not that important and sports are not the answer to raising enrollment.

Hockey is a sport for white men. Basketball is a sport for black men. Golf is a sport for white men dressed like black pimps.

The shame is not in having sported, but in not having broken off the sport.

Sports, on and off the field, should set an example for fairness, decency and humanity for all of our children, not just the legacy of boys already in the boys club.

DOUG GLANVILLE

Although golf was originally restricted to wealthy, overweight Protestants, today it's open to anybody who owns hideous clothing.

People in the States used to think that if girls were good at sports their sexuality would be affected. Being feminine meant being a cheerleader, not being an athlete. The image of women is changing now. You don't have to be pretty for people to come and see you play. At the same time, if you're a good athlete, it doesn't mean you're not a woman.

Sport is the big giveaway. Wherever sport plays a big part in people's lives you can be sure they're bored witless and just waiting to break up the furniture.

People are attacking each other over anything and everything. At times it almost feels like America is about to splinter into two countries, and the same can be said about other nations around the world. There are fewer and fewer things people share. Sports are a safe haven.
